Energy Meters are typically used in an Energy Storage System, to measure the power and energy of the entire application at the distribution box and minimises energy import or export to the grid. They can also be used to measure the output of a PV inverter or AC loads and display the data on GX devices such as the Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX and the VRM Portal.

Description

Victron Energy Meter EM24-3 Phase-Max 65A/Phase Ethernet

Energy Meters play a crucial role in Energy Storage Systems, serving to measure the power and energy across the entire application at the distribution box. This function is essential for optimizing energy usage by minimizing the amount of energy imported from or exported to the grid. Additionally, these meters are capable of measuring the output from PV inverters or AC loads, with the ability to display this data on GX devices like the Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX, as well as on the VRM Portal.

Victron offers a range of Energy Meter models to suit various needs:

  • Victron VM-3P75CT Energy Meter: This model is designed for three-phase systems and connects via Ethernet and VE.Can. It comes with supplied Current Transformers (CTs) and supports a maximum of 80A per phase.
  • ET112 Energy Meter: Suitable for single-phase systems with a maximum capacity of 100A, this model uses an RS485 connection.
  • ET340 Energy Meter: This is a three-phase meter with an RS485 connection, supporting a maximum of 65A per phase.
  • EM24 Ethernet Energy Meter: For three-phase systems, this meter offers an Ethernet connection and can handle up to 65A per phase.
  • EM540 Energy Meter: Another option for three-phase systems, the EM540 connects via RS485 and supports up to 65A per phase.

Each of these models is tailored to meet specific requirements, ensuring that users can find a Victron Energy Meter that fits the needs of their energy storage or monitoring system.

Venus OS supports a diverse range of energy meters, including models manufactured or supplied by Victron as well as units from other manufacturers like Carlo Gavazzi or ABB. These energy meters are integral components of systems employing a GX device, facilitating precise measurements of outputs from PV Inverters, AC Gensets, or serving as a Grid Meter within an Energy Storage System (ESS). Additionally, they can monitor AC loads, providing comprehensive energy management solutions.

Connection and Configuration:

  • The VM-3P75CT energy meter offers a seamless connection to GX devices via VE.Can or Ethernet, requiring no configuration for immediate use.
  • The EM24 Ethernet meter, when connected to a local network accessible by the GX device, serves as another plug-and-play option.
  • Other energy meters connect to GX devices through RS485, either via a wired RS485 to USB interface or wirelessly with Zigbee to USB and Zigbee to RS485 converters, allowing their data to be showcased on GX devices and the VRM portal.

Selection Criteria:

The choice of energy meter is contingent upon the installation’s phase requirements and the maximum current per phase:

  • For three-phase utility connections or PV Inverters, a three-phase meter is necessary.
  • Single-phase utility connections can utilize a single-phase meter, with many three-phase meters also capable of operating in single-phase mode.
  • Installations requiring measurement of a single-phase utility connection and a PV Inverter can opt for two ET112 meters or an ET340.
  • Applications surpassing the maximum current rating necessitate an Energy Meter equipped with current transformers.

Model Selection Based on Requirements:

  • Single-phase installations up to 100A can use direct/shunt measurement solutions like the ET1XX/EM1XX series or ABB B21.
  • Three-phase systems up to 65A per phase also benefit from direct/shunt methods, utilizing meters such as the ET340, EM24, or ABB B23.
  • For higher current demands, current transformer solutions are recommended, with the VM-3P75CT for three-phase setups exceeding 65A per phase being a suitable choice.

Connection Options:

The availability of an Ethernet network can simplify installations by utilizing the Ethernet mode of the VM-3P75CT and the EM24 Ethernet, eliminating the need for RS485 wiring. However, this depends on the network’s reliability. VE.Can offers an even simpler and more direct connection option between the VM-3P75CT and GX devices, independent of network status.

Energy Counting Methodology:

  • The VM-3P75CT, EM24, EM3XX, EM5XX, and ABB meters utilize vector registration for energy counting, a method preferred in many countries for its accuracy and reliability.
  • Other meters employ arithmetic registration, with the differences in energy counting methodologies detailed in Victron Energy Meter manuals for those requiring further information.

This comprehensive range and flexibility in connection and measurement methods ensure that there’s a suitable energy meter solution for virtually any application within the Venus OS ecosystem.
